Lightening slid to a halt, and let out a horrifying cry. "What's wrong girl?" Mel asked, but, was answered with a discusted snort. In the distance a huge thunderhead rolled across the sky, with lightneing streaming down, in all directions. "Oh no! This is just like it was in my dream!" Mel muttered, then turned Lightening, and they headed off, towards the fort, where Jack had went. At some point during their trek from the town, they'd ran into some traveling wagons, and had gotten directions to the fort, with any luck the storm'd turn and go a different route. They raced along, gaining speed with every stride, as the storm gained speed and power. "I hope we can make it there, girl? Before the storm gets us, there's just something I don't like about that storm an' I don't wanna find out what it is!" Mel said, as she ueged Lightening onward. She hated pushing Lightening this hard, but, at a time like this she wasn't thinking about what could happen, just what would happen should they get caught in the storm, and the storm seemed to be gaaining on them, faster than they can get away. Lightening huffed and puffed as hard as she could, her hooves dug into the earth, and her heart raced, the sound ringing in her ears, along with the sounds of the storm. Her eyes were wide with fear, and pain, her nostrils flared, takeing every breath they could get. They slid to halt, at the edge of the canyon, overlooking the fort, and Light stood there breathing heavily, her sides heaving with every breath, as the thunder rolled accross the sky. "Come on, girl?! We have to get there before this storm!" Mel said, urging Lightening to go on. "I know you're tired an' I'm sorry I'm pushin' you so hard, but, it's for our own safty!" she added, as Lightening protested, but, started down anyhow.
It was a long slow go, and the storm caught them before they reached the bottom, a bolt of lightening struck the ground, just inches away from them, spooking Lightening and she raced, as hard as she could dowwn the path, with Mel clinging to the saddle. "Lightenin', slow down?!" Mel shouted, the finally she slowed to a walk, as they reached the bottm. Lightening flashed all around, striking what few trees there were and setting a fire. Lightening spooked as a tree near them was struck, and took off accross the plain. It seemed like they were going to make, when Lightening stumbled, then went crashing to the ground, and sending Mel flying from her back. Mel rolled accross the ground, and lay there motionless for a while, after she'd came to a stop. "Lightenin'!" she called, and was answered by a shrill whinny, in the midest of a thunder clap. Lightening's bad leg had given out, from all the hard galloping, and pressure put on it, from the harsh pounding on the hard earth, this time it wouldn't be able to be healed. She lay there, breathing hard, and cried out in pain, and fear as Lightening flashed all around. Mel staggered to her feet and bolted over to where Lightening lay. "Lightenin'? Are you alright, girl?!" she asked, and the mare raised her head, as whickered at Mel. She struggled to get to her hooves, using that leg to get up, but, fell whenever she'd try. "Oh no! Not your leg?! No! Lightenin' I need you!" Mel said, as tears filled her eyes. She ran a hand over Lightening's leg, it was hot to the touch and swelled, Lightening winched in pain, as she felt Mel, lightly touching her leg. Mel looked around in all directions, hoping she'd some help, but, the fort wasn't as close as it had looked from the top of the canyon. "Help?!" she yelled, but, it was drowned out by the thunder.
She buried her head in Lightening's neck "I love you girl! You've been my best friend and only family, I've ever really had! Please get up? Please be alright? I'm sorry! I promise I'll never push you like that again!" she said, into the think, warm, neck. She raised her head and yelled for help again, over and over, but, everytime the thunder would drown out the sound. Lightening cried out in pain and fear as thunder and lightening got worse. Mel buried her head into Lightening's thick neck again, she didn't care anymore, that there was a storm. All she wanted was for her and Lightening to be safe and live a long happy life, but, knew that LIghtening'd probably never get up again. That thought sank deep within her heart, and now all she could think of was how could she live without Lightening, her best friend and only real family she's ever had. "Go away an' leave us alone!" she shouted at the storm. "HELP?! SOMEBODY, PLEASE?!" She yelled, again. This time it wasn't muffled by the thunder, she yelled again, this time louder, then louder, over and over again. Eventually Lightening joined in, as the lightning continued to flash all around them and strike here and there. 'I hope someone'll hear us.' Mel thought, as she closed her eyes, and thought hard about anything good, and happy. Trying to block out the raging eletrical storm. Mel opened her eyes, then got to her feet and took a deep breath, Oh God I hate to do this!" she mutted to herself. Then drew one of her guns, and aimed at Lightening's head. "I'm so sorry, girl! I love you, please forgive me for this?!" she said, as she closed her eyes, held her breath, then fired. The sound was muffled by the thunder, and Mel fell to ground, crying and dropping the gun beside her, Lightening was gone. Mel'd had no other choice, it had to be done, reguardless of who did it. She gave LIghtening one last hug, her shirt, hands, and face now covered in Lightening's blood. She got to her feet, picked up the gun, the blood from her hand covering the ivory grips, and holstered it. She took one last look at Lightening, then turned and started walking towards the fort.
